A society halfway morphed into a cyborg, spreading its tentacles around Earth
Since we have records of human history and emotions related to these pieces of memory, darkness has always been associated with negative aspects of life, or something that has to be feared if we look into popular culture purposefully avoiding a couple of subcultures that depict darkness as desirable.
Kynes's EP makes part none of the above. Inside Outside Energy is like the sonic recreation of light, or to be more precise, the lack of it. It reveals the beauty of darkness and imperfection, which is highly refreshing in a world where the majority of the scene is rushing towards the cleanest and most sophisticated sound. Say, while Classixx's "Hanging Gardens" is California sunshine, Inside Outside Energy is like hanging out in Deus Ex's Lower Hengsha.
It underlines the state of mind of accepting, understanding and enjoying of what one can have at a given time as limited by the constraints of the web of interactions and conditions we simply refer to as life. While for some the reflection of life sounds like a sandy beach on a sunny day or at least they desire it, some might find the messy, cloudy city whit its traffic jams spiced with constantly flashing screens, the place where they belong. While loads of producers are trying to force a sound that has no cultural links to their way of being, with "Inside Outside Energy" one only has to dig the web while the never ending stream of movement paints a constant blur on the window behind the desk. The neutrality of the sound is what makes the correlation near perfect between globalization and sound.
This shift of paradigm is an essential step towards finding the sound of the 21st century. As Throbbing Gristle came up with the industrial sound in the 70's, inspired by a Great Britain under the fists of the Iron Lady, Kynes have found the right brush and paint to recreate the puzzling, overly complicated and highly vulnerable world that is halfway morphed into a cyborg spreading its tentacles around Earth.
